Many of our guests come simply to walk and climb the spectacular hills around us.  The Caingorm Hills are easily accessible and he Monadhliath Hills with their 4 Munros can be walked from the hostel.  Craig Meagaidh and Laggan Hills are a short drive away.  All give excellent walking but are at their best in winter when there are extensive ice climbing, downhill and cross-country skiing opportunities.  There is excellent low level walking as well and the 10 km Wildcat Trail which encircles Newtonmore gives a good flavour of what is on offer.  A short drive will take you to the magical Rothiemurchus Forest, the largest remaining area of natural Scot's Pine in the Highlands.

But you don't have to be a walker or climber to enjoy the area - there is much more on offer too:

There are miles of forest trails available for mountain bikes at Glenmore and Laggan Wolftrax,

There are two water sports centres within easy reach, at Loch Insh http://www.lochinsh.com/ and Loch Morlich http://www.lochmorlich.com/ which cater for the full range of water based activities, including fishing.

The increasingly popular "aerial adventure" activities such as high rope climbing and zip wires are on offer in nearby Aviemore.

Pony trekking has a long tradition in the Cairngorms and there are a number of riding stables within a short distance.

Or for something a little more exciting, how about quad biking, there are several centres within half an hour's drive, or the dog sled centre at Glenmore is said to be a truly unforgettable experience. If you are keen to try something different but are not sure what to do we can recommend Active spirit.  Tracey and Ian live in Newtonmore and offer an excellent service for both children and adults.

And don't forget the famous "Gravity racing" in July where "soapbox" carts reach speeds of 60mph on the descent of the mountain road.

Those with a keen eye might try their hand at archery or clay shooting, or for those who prefer to shoot photographs there are a number of centres dedicated to wildlife watching including the nature reserve at Insh Marshes.  A visit to Britain's only wild reindeer herd is of course a must for any wildlife enthusiasts.

And so far we haven't even mentioned two of the most popular attractions in the Cairngorms, the Funicular Railway and the Highland Wildlife Park.

For those who want to stay in the village the Highland Folk Museum is well worth a visit giving a fascinating insight into Highland life and while you are walking up there why not try and spot some of Newtonmore's famous wildcats - there are 110 to find and you will see your first one from the hostel window!

A trip to Scotland wouldn't be complete without sampling some single malt whisky. Our local hostelries can help you out but why not visit the Dalwhinnie distillery and find out how it is made.

For a comprehensive guide to activities in the National Park see the official website http://visitcairngorms.com or visit Newtonmore's community website at www.newtonmore.com.
