Craigellachie House
Located in the
Cairngorms National
Park

Craigellachie House is thought to be the oldest building in Newtonmore
and we think that it was built sometime between 1756 and 1824 (probably
1820s); we certainly live between very thick walls, making the house
cool in summer and warm in winter! The house is shown as an inn on
the 1864 Ordnance Survey map. In the 1900s we know that the ground
floor went through several guises including haberdashery, antique
shop, tea room, electrical shop and pharmacy before becoming entirely
residential in the later years of that century. It was refurbished
in 1981/2. We've lived here since 1988.

|
| Both we and the previous owner used part
of Craigellachie House for B&B. We did this for 9½ years (ten
summers) between 1988 and 1998. Provided that we accommodated
no more than six guests and that the guest accommodation was not
above the first floor we did not need a fire certificate. |
